About Me

Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile.  My name is Maysoon and I am a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. I work short term and long term with individuals over the age of 16 in addition to working with groups. I very much enjoy working with people and I feel passionate about supporting them to lead a more fulfilling and happier life.


We all experience emotional distress and sometimes we are able to cope on our own but other times we need extra help. I would be happy to help you when you feel this way. This may be because you are feeling as though you are stuck in a rut or life has maybe thrown you some challenges that you may find too distressing and overwhelming.  Having somebody to listen and support you during this time in a professional, empathic and warm way, can be the way forward.

By using the cognitive behavioural approach (CBT), I can help you understand your problems, use strategies and techniques to enable you to either tolerate or solve them, help you understand how your thoughts can impact your emotions and behaviours, and break the cycle of unhelpful thoughts and coping behaviours. We will work together to identify your goals and help you to achieve them.

While CBT focuses on the ‘here and now’, sometimes it will be important to talk about your past and childhood to help you understand how they impact your life. This will help you understand yourself and help you move forward. As part of the therapy, I might ask you to carry out some tasks between the sessions to help you progress. While my main focus will be on using the cognitive behavioural approach, I will sometimes draw on some aspects from other therapies if I believe it will help you. I will always work at your pace and the entire process will be a collaborative one.  A very important aspect of this therapy is that it will give you skills and techniques that will help you long after the therapy has ended.

Having said all this, I believe that the key to any successful therapy is a strong therapeutic relationship where you will feel understood and supported in a safe and non-judgemental environment.


I have a SCOTACS diploma in counselling and group work using cognitive behavioural therapy, a COSCA certificate in counselling skills, an MSc in Translation and Interpreting and a BA in English Literature.

I have also attended many courses that are helpful to my practice such as trauma training, child protection, mental health first aid training, anger management, conflict resolution, motivational interviewing.


I have worked in the field of mental health and community development for the past 14 years.  I have worked with people with various issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, parenting issues amongst many others. I also have good experience working with ethnic minorities.  I have insight into some of the main problems and difficulties related to culture and identity and I am able to offer support and help in a confidential and non-judgemental environment. 

In addition, I have many years’ experience working with groups delivering psycho-education and self-development courses such as anxiety management, overcoming low mood, confidence building, assertiveness, effective communication and mental health awareness.


I have experience working with the following: Anxiety; Bereavement; Depression; Eating disorders; Low confidence; Low self-esteem; Stress; Sexual abuse; Trauma; Domestic violence; Culture and identity; Relationship problems; Phobias; OCD; Social anxiety.


I am a member of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive psychotherapies, BABCP and I abide by their codes of ethics.


I charge £50 per 60 min session. However, I offer the first session at the reduced price of £25.  This is usually an assessment session where we discuss if the service I offer would be appropriate to your needs and if so how we will work together.  There is no obligation whatsoever to continue if my service doesn’t feel like the right option for you. Payments can be made by cash or card.



I work from the Life Academy Wellbeing Centre at 3B Greenhill Park, Bruntsfield, Edinburgh EH10 4DW. The Centre is situated in a transport hub and is easily accessible by bus or car. Free, private parking is available on request.
