About Me

Hello and Welcome. My name is Katie and I am originally from Scotland, growing up in a remote estate on the West Coast. I have studied and lived in London and Dublin for many years.

As part of my personal and professional development, I have been engaged in a range of individual and group therapy practices. I have followed the path of trauma and healing and, during this process, have investigated an array of training and therapy models of practice. I was drawn to practitioners who intergrated their work with their own personal philosophy of healing, and I worked with them, learning from their extensive knowledge base and practice. Personally, I was most interested in where the nursing and therapy models aligned with healing. The simplest way to explain this is to find ways that aimed to reduce the trauma burden.

I am a lifelong student, and I am always learning. This is part of who I am, my psychological lifeblood. Since the pandemic, the ability to work remotely has presented itself, and it is a privilege to work with individuals from different cultures, often within their own homes, sometimes in very remote areas. This offers a wealth of opportunities for cross-cultural exchanges, learning and the sharing of skills.

There are many accomplishments I am grateful for, but they almost always occur when being part of a team, such as the student project work at the national level in Ireland. On a client level, the experience of overwhelm being reduced and the validation of this, either in person or in a client testimonial, is of great personal and professional significance.

Approach

The therapies I offer include the Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) and the Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM), and they are part of new approaches to trauma. The therapies work differently and facilitate the clearing of body memories and trauma affects slowly and carefully. DBR identifies shock as significant in releasing body memories with the processing of body sensations and core emotions as a key part of trauma therapy. CRM introduces layers of resources such as breathing, body grids and various other supports to work with younger parts of the self-holding the pain. Working with the knowledge of the plasticity of the brain and through tapping into the brain’s innate healing systems, the approaches aim to reduce the trauma burden and the experience of overwhelm.

For more information on these models, there are videos and websites available on the Home page of both therapy models.

Experience

With 24 years of clinical experience in psychology, with a background in nursing, working in a range of settings from Psychiatry, Student Counselling, Employee Assistance Programmes, Critical incident responses and Lecturing, I have the experience of working with individuals from across the lifespan, and from diverse cultural backgrounds who are experiencing difficulties with their mental health and coping.

It has been my privilege to offer psychological assessment, interventions and counselling contracts to clients in my professional practice. Sometimes people are very aware of why they are making an appointment, e.g. feeling sad, anxious and depressed, and sometimes there is a question in their mind that something is not going well in their lives, like relationships, and whatever the situation is, I can offer a warm and confidential service focusing on you as the client and what your individual needs are in the psychotherapy contract.

I also offer specialist consultancy services by arrangement. I am registered with the Protection of Vulnerable Group Scheme with Disclosure Scotland.

“The act of revealing oneself fully to another and still being accepted may be the major vehicle of therapeutic help.” (Yalom)

This practice recognises and values the diversity of all people using the service and does not discriminate on the basis of gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, socio-economic status, religion, disability, race, ethnicity and membership of the Traveller Community (PSI Guidelines for Good Practice with Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Clients).

There are many reasons to organise an appointment, and often, the first step is the most challenging step to take. My experience has involved working with clients presenting with anxiety, depression, trauma, bullying, bereavement, distress and crisis presentations. There is no hard and fast rule, so if you would like to organise an appointment, please complete the contact form.
